About the congress
The 29th ISHE Congress brings the International Society for Human Ethology to Colombia, with a new format that joins the congress and the student workshops in a single meeting.
The society
The International Society for Human Ethology (ISHE) promotes ethological perspectives in the scientific study of human behaviour. It brings together researchers from biology, psychology, anthropology and neighbouring fields who study behaviour through observation, experiment and comparison, across cultures and across species.
A new format
Until 2026, ISHE alternated a congress in even years with a Summer Institute in odd years. From 2027 there is a single annual meeting. The congress now opens with a day of workshops for students, and continues with four days of plenary lectures, talks and posters.
Why Bogotá
Colombia is one of the most biologically and culturally diverse countries on Earth, which makes it a natural setting for a society interested in how behaviour varies and what it shares. Bogotá adds direct flights from three continents, visa-free entry for most participants and a compact, walkable congress area. Read more about the city and the country.
The hosts
The congress is hosted by the Human Behaviour and Evolution Lab (EvoCo), part of the Cognitive and Behavioural Sciences research group (CODEC) at the Faculty of Psychology, Universidad El Bosque. CODEC is ranked A1, the top category for research groups in Colombia, and Universidad El Bosque is recognised by the Colombian government as a High Quality institution. EvoCo is one of the few research centres in South America that study human behaviour from an evolutionary perspective, with work ranging from mate choice and the perception of faces and voices to hormones and behaviour. Milena Vásquez-Amézquita, another congress organiser, is also part of CODEC, beyond the EvoCo lab.
